Memorising the Quran in braille

Ali Bapputty of Thottumugham cannot hide his joy. With all the six volumes of the Quran in Braille in his possession, he cannot stop thanking those who gifted them to him. Though Ali lost his sight at 31, his grit and determination and firm faith in Allah saw him through.

Even at the age of 60, he does not depend much on anyone. After waking up early and completing his chores he heads to the Masjidul Furqan, about 100 yards away from home with a hand staff to attend al Fajr (the early morning prayer) every day.

He has been attending al Fajr since his school days but it has become a routine ever since he lost his sight.

Gaza under siege: Seeking solace in religion

Al-Jazeera- Occupied Gaza Strip - “I consult the Quran before I speak,” explained 48-year-old Kareema Abu Shahma, surrounded by young students in the Jafer mosque in Khan Younis.

“If I need to go somewhere, I study first and then I leave my house. If I’m feeling ill, I study."

Abu Shahma starts and ends her day by reciting the Quran. Having memorised all 6,236 verses of the Muslim holy book in braille over the course of five years, she takes her highly respected title of hafiza– one who has memorised the Quran - seriously.

Every day she revisits about a quarter of the 600-page book to ensure perfect recall.  

In the city of Khan Younis, she leads a class of 25 young girls, hoping to help them achieve the same goal by the first week of September when representatives of the Islamic Waqf (Islamic Trust) will test their knowledge.

Gambar itu dimuat naik oleh seorang wanita melalui akaun Facebooknya pada 5 Januari lalu dan sehingga kini dikongsi lebih 10,000 pengguna yang rata-rata melahirkan perasaan kagum dengan kebolehan lelaki buta itu.

Malah, keterbatasan tak menjadikan ayah tabah itu memberi alasan atau mengeluh kerana terpaksa menghantar anaknya ke tempat asuhan dengan perkhidmatan Transit Aliran Ringan (LRT) setiap hari.
