Ustaz Askar told me In Ramadan Yasin completed recitation of the whole Quran in his late father’s memory.
Yasin is on the Paralympic team, as the Kazakh champion for wrestling.
I started AlFitrah Foundation in 2014 because I wanted the blind to have access to the Quran and islamic books like I did. We have now distributed over 5,000 braille books around the world Alhamdulillah.
I went to Almaty bringing some books for the students at the 5th summer braille Quran program at Nur Mubarak Islamic University by Ustaz Askar Sakhirov. Click here.
I first met Askar maybe 12 years ago, this young man who came to us to learn arabic braille and how to make braille books, so he could teach the blind in his own country.
Today he has taught 60 other teachers and 1000 blind students and his teachers have reached the whole country and beyond. The summer camps have also got students coming from Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
Another student Mansor is 10 and was born totally blind. His mother left her job in finance to start a kindergarten for visually impaired children as there were none in Kazakhstan. Today there’s a waiting list of kids from all over the country waiting to join. It’s an amazing place. The school has rooms for speech therapy, massage, a salt cave and the kids go horse riding and ice skating.
At the age of 5 Mansor told his parents he wanted to learn to read Quran so this is how he joined the summer class.
The Kazakh people are so well-mannered and generous and I was overwhelmed by their hospitality.
