28 November 2022. Al Fitrah Foundation team visited Darul Kalam centre in Gombak, KL to dispose of its damaged Braille Qurans and other religious books.
The centre is under the purview of the Department of Islamic Religious Affairs, Federal Territory (JAWI). With the help of volunteers, they have been carrying out the disposal service of al-Qurans damaged by floods since 20 December 2021.
Weighing
The first phase of the process is to weigh the entire package of damaged materials. Al Fitrah team assisted with the weighing of the 17 plastic bags they brought to Darul Kalam. The bags weighed 231kg in total.
Separation
The second phase is moving the bundles to a preparation area. Each book is thoroughly checked, page-by-page! Pages containing Quranic verses will be separated from the rest of the books and taken to the disposal centre.
Incineration
Subsequently, these sheets are to be burnt in an incinerator.
Dilution dan Disposal
Then, the ashes are soaked in water for a few hours.
The final phase is taking the soaked ashes to the sea to be washed away.
Al Fitrah team was given a guided tour of the facility, and a detailed explanation about the whole process by Ustaz Sham bin Misri from the Research Division, Sharia Unit, JAWI. It was a good learning experience!
JAWI is providing a very important service to the Muslim community. Over the years, tonnes of damaged Qurans and books with Quranic verses have been discarded in the most appropriate way.
